Renaissance Adventure Guides Newsletter

Issue 1, August 2003

Greetings fellow adventurers!

Welcome to the Renaissance Adventure Guides newsletter - Issue #1! We want to thank you for your interest in RAGuides: you are receiving this because you are either a customer or have requested to be placed on our e-mail list. If this is not the case, click to be removed at the bottom of this letter - we hate spam as much as you do. Look for our future issues for information on the different trips we do, reports from past trips, and any other "off the wall" stuff we can think of. If you know anyone who lives the adventurous life or would like to live it, please pass this along.

Thank you guests!

First of all, thanks to all of you who participated in one of our instruction clinics or adventures over the last three months. Whitewater rafting, kayaking, sea kayaking and wilderness survival skills were just a few of the activities that occupied our summer months.

Up-coming events

We are looking forward to a great fall here in Colorado and Max will be leading some wonderful kayaking adventures in Costa Rica in November. Then it will be ski season before we know it - time to learn to Telemark with our PSIA certified instructors, take an avalanche clinic, or explore the snow in the backcountry. Mike will be leading his annual trip to Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro in January, and then it will be boating season all over again.

We love hearing from you

We're looking forward to hearing what you have been up to over the last three months, so be sure to drop us a line at info@raguides.com. In the event that you want to do something that you don't see on our website, be sure to contact us first: we are always happy to yarn with you about where you are going. We may just want to join you!

Recent Trips

Mts Kenya & Kilimanjaro, Feb 2003
Patty and Julie at the Ash Pit on Mt Kilimanjaro

Time: 2-18 Feb 2003
Participants: Julie, Patty, Jim
Trip Leader: Mike

(Note: This was a self-supported trip, meaning that all members carried their own packs (70+lbs) which contained all food and gear used by the individuals while on the mountains. A staff of about 4-5 local porters and guides accompanied the group as backup, as well as to provide local knowlegde and some great company while on the trail.)

We landed in Nairobi, Kenya late at night on 3 Feb after more than 24 hours of airline travel from the US. Our friendly local support crew met us at the airport and shuttled us off to our welcome beds and some dinner at the Boulevard Hotel. We left the next morning in the Land Rover for the trailhead just west of Chogoria village.

The first night would be spent in the bandas at the Chogoria trailhead. These proved to be very comfortable cabins, which were managed by a caretaker who came by just before dark to light the fires in our fireplaces and to stoke the fires of our hot water tanks - and we were prepared to stay in our tents! A late afternoon walk around the bandas gave us views of cape buffalo and water buck.

The next morning we could see the twin summits of Mt Kenya illuminated by the sunrise. What a view! We were soon on the trail, and feeling the heat of the African sun, even at 10,000 feet. We arrived at our first campsite, Lake Ellis, at 1:30pm and made a good lunch. We then took a leisurely hike up to the top of Mugi Hill in the intermittent fog to get a some views of the valley and of the Giants Billiards Table across the way...
