Sustainable Travel and Tourism

Sustainable tourism in its purest sense, is an industry committed to making a low impact on the natural environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment for locals.[1]

For years the term “Eco-Tourism” has been thrown around with no true definition of what it meant. Anything could be an eco-tour, whether or not it had any positive impact on the environment or local cultures. At Renaissance Adventure Guides we choose to operate our adventures and training courses in a sustainable manner (we are not an “Eco-Tourism” company). We realize that adventure activities can place great stresses on our remaining biologically diverse habits and indigenous cultures. By being aware and sensitive to these dangers we actively seek to protect the destinations and areas that we visit.

According to Wikipedia, you can reduce the impact of your adventure travel activities in the following manner:

  • Inform yourself of the culture, politics, and economy of the communities visited
  • Anticipate and respect local cultures' expectations and assumptions
  • Contribute to intercultural understanding and tolerance
  • Support the integrity of local cultures by favoring businesses which conserve cultural heritage and traditional values
  • Support local economies by purchasing local goods and participating with small, local businesses
  • Conserve resources by seeking out businesses that are environmentally conscious, and by using the least possible amount of non-renewable resources

As a company we openly take responsibility for the impact that our activities take on both a micro and macro level. Our staff has been trained in minimum-impact or “Leave No Trace” techniques to insure that we leave the areas that we visit in the same or better condition than when we arrived. We strive to consume a minimal amount of natural resources and use natural/organic products whenever possible. Our entire network of sister companies also subscribe to this code of ethics and we are proud to be working with them. Practicing sustainable travel and tourism is not just a good idea; it is the only way that we can move towards a positive future in the world of adventure training and travel.
